Heyóka

There are some conflicting descriptions of what Heyóka are yet even these hold many similarities. Some tradition says a Heyóka is a trickster spirit, a contrarian, jester, satirist or sacred clown. The Heyóka spirit speaks, moves and reacts in an opposite fashion to the people around it. In Lakota mythology, Heyóka is also a spirit of thunder and lightning. He is said to use the wind as sticks to beat the drum of thunder. Other tradition says they are Indigo Children. A trait common to both is the backwards way of doing things as well as the visions/dreams and contrarian traits. The trait of thunder and lightning associated with Heyóka legend can be seen as more figurative than literal. Becoming Heyóka is like being born again (if you weren’t born Heyóka).
